Shoot yourself in
the foot
Meaning
- To do or say something stupid which causes problems for you.
Examples
- Tom shots himself in the foot by suggesting that women politicians were incompetent.
- Rafa Benitez shoots himself in both feet and talks himself out of a job. If it wasn't clear already, Rafa Benitez won't be at Chelsea beyond May. During the press conference after last night's match against Middlesborough he went off on one, and blamed the Chelsea fans and the board of directors for his problems. I wonder what they now think about the manager.
Jump on the bandwagon
Meaning
- To profit from a craze; to join a trend.
Examples
- After the incredible success of Cadbury's latest low-fat chocolate bar, Nestlé has jumped on the bandwagon, and released a low-fat version of Kit Kat.
- The bandwagon Chelski supporters expect instant success. Now that they're not getting it anymore they turn on the manager or jump ship for the Man City bandwagon. How come none of these fans boo the biggest problem at that club-the Russian gangster Abramovich. He may have funded their early success but his arrogance, stupidity and ruthlessness is also the root cause of their downfall
